ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the case in which a space of intimacy is opened up without one’s consent and in doing this, it applies E. Husserl’s genetic method on what Koestenbaum calls “existential sexuality.” It follows up on the description of practical intentionality and the genesis of intimacy provided. The chapter analyzes the link between sexuality and intimacy to show how the genetic character of intimacy informs the passive and active choices that constitute one’s sexual identity. It investigates the teleological and recursive structure of existential sexuality, which will read as being defined by the passive and active layers of the decisions people habitually make in their intimate lives. Sexual existential freedom lies exactly in the decision to be awake and attend to the constitution of one’s sexual identity. The chapter describes the essential features that characterize transcendental intimacy and how they directly influence a person’s sexual life.
