ABSTRACT

Amorphous carbon-based films can help components enhance their surface stability and improve their working performance and lifetime and, thus, have attracted intensive attention in the past decades. This chapter addresses the advances in various types of films including pure-carbon films, multiple elements-doped films, gradient multilayers, and smart environment self-adapted carbon films known as “chameleon” nanocomposites. The compositions and phase diagrams of these amorphous carbon-based films and their properties such as mechanical and physical properties, chemical stabilities, and biocompatibilities are discussed with a particular emphasis on the correlation between the properties of these films and their microstructures. The potential applications of these films are also demonstrated in automobile, aerospace, biomedical, and many other industries.
