ABSTRACT
Questions of the profession, professionalisation, legitimacy of practising Chinese midwifery, the practice, power, rivalries over claims to knowledge and skills and other issues are examined. The concepts of profession and professionalisation are often used by practitioners and institutions to gain prestige and as a tactic to regulate the members of an occupational group. Traditional midwives, legitimacy, identity, regulation, power and technology are also addressed.
