ABSTRACT

Terrorism has been a recurring theme in some areas of the world, even when it has occurred in different contexts. While some countries have experienced a particular type of terrorist violence over the course of many years—such as the activities of the Euzkadi ta Askatasuna in Spain—a number of countries have faced waves of terrorist activity. Some countries will suffer from multiple types of terrorism despite having had long-established political systems and histories as independent countries within the same general boundaries. Terrorism also became an important weapon used by extremists among the Jewish nationalists in their successful efforts to convince the British to leave the territory. The war in Vietnam generated left-wing dissent, which generated the low-level terrorism of the Weathermen and other groups of dissidents. Turkey faced a series of terrorist campaigns directed against the government or citizens that were ultimately interrelated with each other and made efforts to end the violence more difficult.
