ABSTRACT

In Chapter 7, I considered the regulatory frameworks offered by families as a key site for the production of identity and position. This has prompted me to discuss families vis-à-vis schools in an attempt to render justice to their internal complexities. The aim was not only to unpack and expose the workings of dichotomous oppositions, but also to emphasise the interplay of multiple and often contrasting discourses. This chapter concludes the empirical analysis by looking at how young pregnant women navigate their lives with reference to the conflicting norms offered by both traditional and modern regimes. The main claim of this chapter is that the itineraries individuals produce by referring to different regulatory frameworks are directly implicated in the performances of girls’ identities.
