ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the notions of ‘entrepreneurial pull’ or ‘unemployment push’ to explain the sudden and rapid expansion of professionals’ into self-employment. The investigation is bounded by the question, “Do these moves herald a new ‘normal’ in configuring work and career?” The chapter draws on conceptual and empirical evidence to offer results which highlight the broader institutional context of the changing nature of work and career. Explicit links between institutions, organizations and individuals offer the potential to not only understand the history behind how and why careers have developed but also provide deep insight into how they are developing.
