ABSTRACT

244 245With one older and one younger sister I grew up in Cincinnati. Both parents frequently reminded us that some of our ancestors had been illustrious. They included a general in the War of 1812, a congressman, a naval admiral, and an ambassador to Greece, Latvia, and Turkey. My father was a civil engineer and my mother was an artist. They were certainly independent-minded, and, Alice, my wife of 51 years says that I am independent-minded, too.
