ABSTRACT

On my office door, there is a collage of golf adages and pictures along with this statement: “If you want something badly enough, you are only half alive without it, no matter what the personal sacrifices are needed to get it.” This statement has been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional career strategies for the past 40 years or so, for it indicates not only that tradeoffs and sacrifices are needed to achieve any goal, but also, without goals, life is less than it could be. Early childhood experiences often shape future behaviors and several key events prior to my entering college shaped my behavior.
