ABSTRACT

Extensive empirical work in Britain, consisting of a cross-section survey and case studies of selected firms led Joan Woodward research team to an initial classification into three groups: unit and small batch production, large batch and mass production and process production. Most technology used in peripheral economies is imported, the jump from one form of production to another tends to be greater than in central economies; sometimes it is from zero to a very advanced technology. Most firms/industries have their characteristic form of production which determines what type of work is carried out by most of the employees. Firms involved in cloth production tend to rely more heavily on skilled workers, since each order creates different problems and requires individual attention. There are signs that even technical workers in production of prototypes are increasingly subjected to de-skilling methods, including those engaged in research and development.
