ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book concerns the expansion of development theory as a capitalist phenomenon. It explores this observed fact by way of a critical analysis of the cyclical phenomenon identified as neoextractivism in Latin America and the Caribbean. The book focuses on the relationship between development theory and capitalist development. It discusses extractivism and neoextractivism to highlight and compare some of the principal existing ideas on two concepts. The book addresses the problem as to whether it is a myth or reality that neoextractivism is specific to neoliberal capitalism. It focuses on natural resources extraction and expanded capitalist relations. The book analyzes natural resources extraction as a development strategy pursued by the post-colonial authoritarian state. It analyzes degeneration of the post-colonial authoritarian state into a criminal enterprise and the role of natural resources extraction in that process.
