ABSTRACT

The extraordinary development of management theory has resulted in the creation of many new terms. This chapter undertakes a thorough analysis of selected management concepts in an effort to: clarify the meaning of these concepts by tracing their evolutionary development; initiate a standardization of the fundamental terminology and definitions used in the field of management; provide a beginning lexical source for additional future development and compilation of management terminology, and contribute to the first and perhaps most vital step in the process of creating a valid and universally accepted general theory of management. The methodology employed throughout the main body of the dissertation has been one of analysis, clarification and recommendation. Areas not included in this dissertation also need to be investigated. Such research areas are: other principles associated with the management functions of planning, organizing and controlling, other accepted functions of management such as directing, and other lesser agreed upon management functions such as staffing.
