ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Nazi doctors who violated every principle of medicine as we know it. It is not necessary to go into vivid detail; the Nazi experiments are well documented. Although this is a difficult topic, I felt it needed to be included in my explorations. I became certain that if I was to attempt to understand the nature of evil, the events at the heart of the Holocaust could not be ignored. I hoped that perhaps understanding what went awry with these healers would help enlighten my questions about evil. Topics that are found in this chapter include Robert Lifton’s work on doubling and a discussion of the role of the Nuremberg Code and Belmont Report. The slippery slope of human subjects’ research includes examining examples such as the 1975 report on the CIA who gave LSD to subjects without their knowledge or consent. The importance of understanding unethical research did not stop after World War II is considered in light of what was supposed to have been learned from the events of the Holocaust.
