ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the politics of philanthropy and education at the nexus of water security, international development and sport. Based on research into the use of sport for international development fundraising, it reflects on the ways in which charities, particularly those focused on water scarcity and infrastructure, use physical activity to encourage donations among global North citizens. Given the limits of this approach, and the importance of environmental education, it discusses the possibilities of using immersive education technologies as a way to encourage more genuine thinking and learning about the importance and challenge of environmental sustainability.
