ABSTRACT

This chapter is about an integration of art therapy with CBT that could benefit clients who otherwise may not be treated with CBT alone. In my experience, many CBT therapists are struggling today, as they feel something is missing to make a long-lasting impact. I know several CBT therapists who do long-term CBT (yes, that exists) and who feel the need to tap into unconscious or underlying cognitions. There is a strong belief among art therapists that art therapy can enhance traditional CBT and that CBT-based art therapy may be as effective as psychodynamic-based approaches. It is most probable that no single definitive approach will ever be adequate to cover the complexity of individual client needs, so adding CBT to art therapy and vice versa, might be the secret ingredient that makes a difference. The reader is encouraged to participate through drawings and self-reflection.
