ABSTRACT

The way learning informs teaching and teaching informs learning is the basic component of education. This chapter explores the way the more capable other directs the process of mathematical learning in relation to the possibility of collaborative learning, teaching and assessment. The documentation of children's conversations during play highlights the possibilities for learning, teaching and the assessment process. Pedagogical documentation can be understood as a dynamic mode of assessment because it relies on the interactions between teacher and learner. The chapter analyses three learning episodes. The first episode consists of Bill and Mary setting up a lemonade stall and using money to buy and sell lemonade. In the second episode, Mary and Bill work collaboratively on a computer game and challenge each other's understanding. The final episode focuses on a whole class assessment task and the learning outcomes from the task.
