ABSTRACT

As the broader context changes, so do the public spaces within. In South Africa, drivers such as neglect, fear, symbolism, invasion, technology and survival power the transformation of public space. Each of these gives rise to a specific need; for example, neglect creates a need for maintenance and cleanliness, while fear creates a need for safety and security. This chapter discusses these drivers and needs based on the perceptions and experiences of users. This is followed by a presentation of the main planning and design ideas that are utilised to modify the nature and use of public spaces in the country. These ideas are sustainable, new, enclosed and tactical urbanism.
