ABSTRACT

The transformation of urban contexts in response to increasing populations continues to produce unique strategies for the enhancement of pedestrian experience. In all instances, the evolution of urban contexts is providing opportunities for the use of a broad range of contemporary applications within the hierarchy of urban connections. Historically the hierarchy of urban connections derives from the use of the street grid as a mechanism for circulation order, a strategy that continues to be an effective connection typology. Community planning and design initiatives are open to strategies for enhancing urban identity. The result is the ongoing appearance of design applications along pedestrian connections, of permanent and temporary qualities, including parks, parklets, pop-ups, street seats, and retail extensions. If the shift to urban residency continues to evolve, the ongoing dynamic of contemporary applications in pedestrian connections will change the appearance of established urban contexts in cities and towns, globally.
