ABSTRACT

The significance of contemporary alternatives and applications in the future planning and design of urban connections is the subject of this chapter. Of prime significance is the ongoing articulation of community standards and outcomes directed at walkability and livability in urban contexts. The quality of resources is a current and future issue. However, communities are recognizing alternatives for accomplishing current goals and objectives related to livability and identity. The presence of smart cities, smart streets and Complete Streets agendas are potential references for communities with the intention of engaging current environmental and technological standards as a means for producing positive livability outcomes. Current alternatives also include the presence of both public and private entities as resources for accomplishing positive outcomes. Both resources have the opportunity to achieve inductive, bottom-up results, as a way of realizing site responsive outcomes. If urban entities continue to move their agendas forward, they will produce viable standards and outcomes, with benefits for livability and urban identity.
