ABSTRACT

Good critics are as objective as possible, grounding their analyses in theory applied to messages that merit analysis. Our natural inclination is to tell others our opinion about a message, but critics purposely control that impulse. Chapter 2 explains the differences between “glandular responses” (mere reporting or opinion-giving) and criticism that is explanatory and generated by taking a “balcony perspective.” You will learn the significant differences between “arguing with” a message and “arguing about” a message. Good critics argue about messages.
