ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the realm of coaching virtual and remote teams. It focuses on some of the more common issues encountered including: the context of virtual and remote teams; three areas team coaches may find different; and team coaching across distance: the layer of technology. As technology continues to evolve, an increasing number of team coaches are being called upon to coach virtual and remote teams, as well as intact teams, virtually. In coaching with a global, or continent-wide, virtual team, there are silos which can be created via time zones. The exploration of layers of culture can be a significant doorway to the coaching conversation. Masterful team coaches will benefit from learning more about the cultures of the teams they work with. Virtual and remote teams benefit when time is spent co-designing ground rules for team coaching, which may also become part of their everyday approaches to work.
