ABSTRACT

Denise Wallace-Spriggs has served as the costume crafts artisan for the Huntington Theatre, a LORT-B company based in Boston, Massachusetts. Denise wasn’t born knowing that she wanted to be a costume craftsperson, but she did grow up in a family of makers. Ultimately, Denise came to embrace craftwork as her place in the costuming field. Although Denise has been on staff at the Huntington, she had some impressive early gigs as an assistant to legendary masters in the field. Denise has a wonderful approach to the collaborative process in terms of her philosophy for creating in tandem with designers, performers, and costume-makers on her team. Denise brings an accommodating professionalism to the fitting process, with mindfulness toward creating a welcoming place for the performer and an accommodating space for the designer. Denise also encourages her students, crafts assistants, and colleagues to consider teamwork their paramount skill to cultivate for success.
