Developing a human rights policy
Chapter 10 considers the essential role of a human rights policy or statement for companies seeking to meet their responsibility to respect human rights. The chapter discusses UN Guiding Principle 16, which provides guidance on how to develop a human rights policy. The policy should set out the company’s approach to identifying, preventing, mitigating, and accounting for its adverse human rights impacts. It should also explicitly commit to respecting all internationally recognised human rights standards. Chapter 10 provides some guidance and suggestions on how a company might develop its human rights policy, taking into account the particular risks and challenges facing the business and its industry. Lastly, it discusses the different forms a human rights policy or statement may take, noting some benefits and drawbacks of each.
