ABSTRACT

The chapter takes us from the basics of machine design all the way through the fabrication and installation process. Factors of safety, or design factors, are introduced conceptually along with concepts like D:d ratio and reverse bending, all critical to designing a successful machine. The concept of the Design Spiral is also presented as a different way of thinking about the design process. Instead of viewing design as a timeline it is proposed to think about it as a spiral getting smaller and smaller, more and more detailed on each trip around the circle. Fleet angle is also introduced conceptually, along with third-party engineering review. Factory Acceptance Testing, FAT, and Site Acceptance Testing, SAT, are detailed and explained; both their vices and virtues. The chapter closes with a discussion on programming an automated system and how to appropriately plan for the time that will take.
