ABSTRACT

Screen tests bring back thoughts of 1940s films, but they still happen in both films and TV. The differences in screen testing from callbacks are that they then add in costumes, makeup and other actors, and then they film it. Stage directions are very different in callbacks and screen tests from auditions. A growing trend in film auditions and their callbacks is actors being asked to improvise either for an entire scene/situation or as an add-on (after the text in a scene is done). However, there are two great rules about improvising. The first is that, in any group improvisation setting, be the first or second person into the scene or dialogue because then actors have more control over what it is about. The second great rule about improvising is that, if actors have any unusual or cool talent and have not been able to show that to the casting people thus far, bring it into the improvisation.
