ABSTRACT

The 2017 Primetime Television Emmy Awards, regardless of the 2016 election and the political issues surrounding it, were probably the most inclusive in television history in the pool of winners with people of color, women and LGBTQIA folks taking home many awards. Yet, in early 2018, Alec Baldwin and Jake Gyllenhaal and Andrew Garfield and Joaquin Phoenix and Hong Chau and Sally Hawkins and Denzel Washington, and quite a few other actors still, will all play disabled lead roles in major motion pictures coming from Hollywood. “There’s still a lot of misconceptions about who trans people are,” Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox told the Television Critics Association. Acting and imperfections are a reflection of reality. Especially for the LGBTQIA community, disabled artists and actors of color, play to beautiful imperfections, embrace gorgeous differences.
