ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the history and current trends of multicultural counseling competencies in the field of psychology as a whole as well as in humanistic psychology. Multicultural awareness and competencies are vital to develop for both psychologists and psychology educators. Increasing one’s grounding in multicultural competencies is essential for generating better outcomes for clients. In response, over the last decade humanistic psychology has increasingly focused upon the development of multicultural awareness, skills, and attitudes among humanistic practitioners and educators in the context of cultural humility while also considering systemic and theoretical challenges within the field. Humanistic psychology has embraced the ongoing obligation to address issues of cultural competencies and to take this discussion beyond the competencies as well. However, there is still much work to be done and this chapter addresses potential future directions as well as introducing important questions for future consideration.
