ABSTRACT

The coefficient of contingency can be used to measure the relation between two quantitative variables as well as that between characters one or both of which is a qualitative attribute, but the coefficient of correlation cannot be applied to attributes, since it is only a relation between two variables that can be presented as a mathematical "regression" equation. There is a regression of infant mortality on father's income. Infant mortality and father's earnings co-vary and the regression line measures the law of their co-variation. If there were no particular association the same proportion of the food-and-raw-materials trade as of total trade would be imported into the United Kingdom from British possessions. British possessions can be said to specialize in exporting food and raw material to the Mother country as against foreign countries who specialize in exporting manufactures to the United Kingdom.
