ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the ways advanced clinical courses student can use the anxiety creatively to facilitate a solid foundation for counseling. All forms should serve a purpose in the treatment of the client. Although many sites contain many pieces of information, at a minimum the packet should include an informed consent document a consent to reveal confidential information form and a background information form. Empathy has historically been viewed as an important part of the alliance-building between counselor and client. If empathy is the path to connecting with the client’s world, unconditional positive regard is the way of accepting the client’s right to see the world in his or her uniquely personal manner without judgment from the counselor. Many counselors impede congruence by erecting a rigid professional facade, placing extreme emotional distance between client and counselor. Paraphrasing is a technique that acknowledges the understanding of a client’s behavior or thought process.
