ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to obtain a license, pursue employment, and continue to grow as a practicing clinician. The National Board for Certified Counselors states on its website that it “is the nation’s premiere professional certification board devoted to credentialing counselors who meet standards for the general and specialty practices of professional counseling.” Three thousand hours of supervised, post-master’s clinical training is a common, basic licensure requirement. In comparison to practicum and internship site supervision, selecting a clinical supervisor is a different and more complicated process. Licensure and national certifications are important landmarks. One of the most rewarding investments of time for us professionally has been the creation of a peer network for the discussion of cases and sharing of professional struggles and successes. Counselor educators recognizes that the equivalent force for counseling professionals comes from our relationship with the network of professionals with whom we surround ourselves.
