ABSTRACT

In 1980, Arthur Cohn submitted to the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation "A Pilot Study for the Evaluation and Management of a Significant Shipwreck in Lake Champlain". In this document the society outlined specific goals for the study of Phoenix, including site documentation to help determine its eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, data collection for analyzing the construction of early American steamboats, public education initiatives, and the generation of a database and a basic procedures manual for documenting the remains of submerged sites in the lake. Lake Champlain contains an impressive array of historic and archaeological resources in and around the lake, spanning a period of 11,300 years of human occupation. In addition to such cultural resources as submerged prehistoric sites, historic dumpsites, naval battle sites, and harbor works, the lake contains one of North America's largest collections of historic shipwrecks.
