ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at AI’s methods and strategies to assist Brazilian political prisoners. Through a specific examination of Amnesty’s archival sources and the British Foreign Office records, this chapter discusses the organisation’s work regarding the Brazilian dictatorship. The chapter discusses the idea that the plight of Brazilian political prisoners inspired Amnesty International to change its traditional methods and adopt new tactics. Besides the assistance to Brazilian political prisoners, AI played an important role in denouncing state violations abroad. Publicising the torture charges in Britain was an important way of contradicting the image of a democracy that the Brazilian government liked to display.
