ABSTRACT

The performance of a pavement structure can be improved by using materials or a combination of materials between the pavement layers. These materials or combinations of materials are termed as interlayers. The main function of the interlayer includes resistance to moisture, and mitigation of reflection cracking. They also provide reinforcement to the asphalt layer so that the pavement can withstand traffic loading and thereby extend the life of the pavement structure. The performance of the interlayer will depend on the strength of the interlayer and the asphalt layer. RoaDrain™ Roadway Drainage System is a commercially available synthetic subsurface drainage layer that can replace conventional base layers. It is an interlayer, which is composed of nonwoven geotextile filters laminated to the top and bottom of a tri-planar geonet core. The geotextile material helps in separation and filtration of fines and other materials. Another commercial product, the GlasPave® Paving Mat is a combination of fiberglass mesh embedded in high performance polyester mats.
