ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author briefly outlines his findings before describing the contributions this book makes to twin research, its practical implications and those who might benefit from it. He also discusses the limitations of his study and ideas for future research. In relation to identity, the author highlights that ostensibly objective ways in which psychological research speaks about twin identity, a complex web of cultural and societal influences informs how twins construct and claim their identities. He demonstrates that twins' descriptions differ from their representation in the psychological literature and popular culture. The chapter shows how the notion of individualism joins the three aspects of twin identity, namely: the metaphor of a couple, the theme of being misunderstood, and the different dimensions of twin identity.
