ABSTRACT

This chapter covers a number of beat-making activities which are directly supported by cloud-based music production (CBMP) services such as Splice, Loopcloud, and Noiiz. In some cases, such as Fytch’s Spring 2018 hip-hop beat-making challenge on Splice, producers may also combine CBMP resources with live instruments. The libraries which CBMP services offer contain drums sounds with nearly any conceivable timbre, velocity, or playing style. Users can apply search filters to a query, such as “snare drum,” for example, in order to find a sample which suits their creative needs. An additional way of conceptualizing sounds in CBMP requires one to consider the sound’s general instrument family. CBMP libraries facilitate this type of organization by tagging samples according to the types of instrument sounds they contain. Users who intend to make music from these sample libraries will inevitably come into contact with this type of categorization.
