ABSTRACT

Ambivalence is conflict, cognitive dissonance, or indecisiveness expressed as a clash of preferences. It can be expressed toward one, many, or all dream elements. Ambivalence occurs in Dream Sociometry on the Dream Sociomatrix when two scores share one grid square in the Dream Sociomatrix. It is represented by a positive and a negative preference separated by a slash. Ambivalent raw scores can be seen at the right and bottom margins of the Dream Sociomatrix. While the distinction between neutrality and either positive or negative preferences can be considered a clash of preferences, the more common and stronger variety of ambivalence is between positive and negative preferences. There are four types of ambivalence and four degrees of ambivalence observed in the Dream Sociomatrix.
