ABSTRACT

In order to further our understanding of meaning-making in later life, this author interviewed women who are successfully navigating the post-midlife years and explored how they are making their lives meaningful. Utilizing a qualitative research method for analyzing social phenomena (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis or IPA), this author investigated the process by which women create meaningful and purposeful lives. This chapter discusses two important thematic results that emerged from the research: existential pursuits and affirmation of life. Women who are successfully navigating this life stage are entertaining philosophical questions, being self-reflective and exploring spiritual issues. Whereas marriage, children and career may have held their attention in earlier years, these individuals have expanded their thinking to broader issues. Additionally, the thematic results of this research show that many women in later life look to life-affirming activities and attitudes that engage their intellect, creativity, bodies and souls. These activities bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose in addition to providing opportunities to explore areas previously uncharted.
