ABSTRACT

Asking about Charles Darwin and the problem of evil turns out to be a lot more interesting than one might think. Darwin's theory of evolution, as expounded in his Origin of Species, makes central the mechanism of natural selection. Darwin and Dawkins certainly have a point, there is reason to think that the situation is not quite as bad as it seems at first. Darwinism seems rather negatively involved here, too. At a weaker level, any theory based on unbroken law promotes determinism and an absence of free will. At a stronger level, Darwinism seems to promote genetic determinism they are what they are because of their genes, and the next move is the final solution. The parable of the talents is as binding on Darwinians as it is on Christians. Darwin stressed the lawlike nature of the world and cherished his theory for extending our understanding of this lawlike nature in the world of living plants and animals.
