ABSTRACT

Fraud examiners are hired to conduct internal investigations in both private and public organizations. DNB is a private bank in Norway, the DNB standing for Den Norske Bank (The Norwegian Bank). DNB was suspected of financial crime following the leakage of the Panama Papers. This chapter focuses on DNB executives' knowledge of and involvement in wealth management as well as the fraud examiners' private internal investigation at DNB. Critical issues in private internal investigations are discussed, the theory of convenience is applied to bank misconduct and principal-agent theory is used to study relationships at several levels, that is, between the Norwegian ministry and the bank's board, between the board and corporate management, between management and subsidiary management, and between the bank and its clients. The board at DNB then hired attorneys at local Norwegian law firm Hjort to conduct an internal investigation of the bank. The investigation team from Hjort consisted only of lawyers.
