ABSTRACT

When the Spanish conquered the Aztecs in Mexico, they stigmatized them as cannibals and sodomites. Following a common pattern, they at first took indigenous women as concubines and as translators and intermediaries, but soon prohibited intermarriage in order to preserve the boundaries of race. Missionaries tried to inculcate their own sexual attitudes, but indigenous people understood their preaching according to their own cosmologies.
