ABSTRACT

Journalism has been one of the most demanded academic programs for many years in Nepal. At present, undergraduate level journalism courses are offered at 80 different colleges, while six institutions offer graduate degrees in journalism. In this chapter, I provide an overview of the growth of the colleges and institutions offering degrees in journalism in Nepal, and critically assess key factors affecting the quality of journalism education in the country. I argue that the quality of journalism education is not adequate to meet international standards in spite of the fact that there is a considerable growth of journalism institutions and students. Similarly, I would also argue that the Nepali diaspora, with exposure to higher education and work experience in developed countries, can serve as an untapped resource in fostering quality education in journalism and communications.
