ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on amplifying the voice of the people working within the education system in East Jerusalem. The split of the Palestinian teachers into two separate groups cast them into role players in the power struggle of oppression: one group cooperating with the oppressor’s policy and the other as the doubly oppressed group. First, the Israeli authorities – the Ministry of Education and the Jerusalem municipality – employ a biased policy, discriminating against the East Jerusalem residents; second, the Palestinian-Israeli teachers cooperate with the authorities in their patronizing attitude, exhibiting control and domination. The disrespectful attitude of the residents, according to the interviews of the participants, toward the teachers in East Jerusalem has a grave effect on the image of the teachers and the work they do. The teacher expects people around him or her to respect the teaching profession, to regard it as an occupation that requires dedication to the students and to the community.
