ABSTRACT

The main findings of the interviews reveal the situation of the students in school and the attitude of the teachers and the system toward them. More than two-thirds of the participants replied with negative statements regarding their school experience, while fewer than a third replied with positive statements about their school. The findings show that the teaching method in lecturing to students, which is common in most schools in East Jerusalem, does not leave a favorable effect on the students. The graduates reported that they find this method “boring” “unchallenging”, “forgotten” and that they “do not miss any teacher who was teaching in this way”. Ministry of Education forbidding any type of violence in the school, there seems to be verbal and physical abuse in East Jerusalem schools. These violent incidents are rarely reported to the authorities, and the school is usually able to reach a settlement with the parents.
