ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with conflict within home–the consideration that home can trap people, or make people feel trapped. It examines wider planning-process community conflict – disputes between community members on where housing should be built, where people should be able to live; and offers suggestions on negotiating conflict, reflecting on lessons from some of my research project findings. In the case of local people protecting against the 'unwanted', collectives are built where they may previously have not existed. Home can be a site of depletion, domestic drudgery, unhappiness and sometimes domestic violence. At one end of the spectrum, there will be many who will feel exhausted by all the work that home creates; there is an element of gendered social depletion through home 'work' and how that disadvantages, mostly, women. The term neighbour nuisance is rarely used, it falls within the wider term of 'anti-social behaviour'.
