ABSTRACT

Dermatophytic onychomycosis (OM) is the most common form of onychomycosis. It affects almost 50% of individuals older than 70 years. Distal lateral subungual onychomycosis (DLSO) is the most common clinical variant of OM. Trichophyton rubrum and mentagrophytes are the commonest agents causing dermatophytic OM. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, onychoscopy, direct microscopy, culture, and histopathology. This chapter describes etiopathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, and therapeutic modalities available for treatment of OM.
