ABSTRACT

There are a number of properties of solid wastes, which compound the difficulties of decision-making and modelling. Ordinary household wastes, which themselves contain many different components, make up only a small part of the problem. The research papers in the area can be classified into three categories: mathematical models which use mathematical programming and other advanced operations research tools; computer simulation models; and other works: regression analysis, data collection and policy-analytical studies of general nature. The mathematical models can be further classified into two categories: models for the collection facet of waste management; and models for selection of transfer stations, incinerators and other intermediate processing plants, and disposal sites for regional management. J. E. Quon, A. Charnes and S. J. Wersan developed a model to simulate the operational characteristics of a refuse collection system using daily route method.
