ABSTRACT

ECESIS, an interregional economic-demographic model of the United States, includes econometric models, spatial interaction models, and cohort-component models. It incorporates theories and methods from economics, regional science, geography, demography, and sociology, which, in many cases, have been extended and modified in recognition of the important differences between the national and subnational levels of analysis. This chapter provides an overview of the ECESIS model. It summarizes structure of the model and discusses general modelling strategies. The chapter focuses on the economic submodel and demographic submodel. The economic submodel of ECESIS is a time-series structural model estimated over the sample period 1958 to 1974. The basic demographic processes that must be addressed in such a model are: fertility, mortality, aging and migration. The chapter also provides a brief discussion of the economic-demographic linkages in ECESIS. It also summarizes the properties and applications of ECESIS.
