ABSTRACT

On social and organizational objectives, it is worthwhile reiterating that in none of the organizations was labour reduction an explicit objective. At Don Ltd, a 'softly-softly' labour strategy had always been the preferred approach, or style. On the question of staff and employee involvement per se, this has been very limited, and largely superficial throughout the adoption process. People issues tend to lose out in the process unless there is a very clear management philosophy of employee involvement in awareness of change and in contribution to planning. The Meadows & Butler case study showed how new technology can be viewed strategically, and that engineers can, not only be found on the boards of British manufacturing organizations, but can play a key role in strategy formulation in relation to new technology adoption. The adoption of new technology often involves an element of faith.
