ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the adoption of a key form of new technology in the Bramley Building Society. With respect to the first two on-line systems introduced into the Bramley Building Society – the enquiry system within Head Office itself, and the first branch office system at Trent – some comments on the objectives are appropriate. Executive management decided to seek Board approval for the adoption of the on-line system throughout the Society. In any attempt to understand the social processes involved in the adoption of new technology, it is important to locate the analysis in the wider context of developments taking place outside the particular organizations under consideration, including sector-level matters. It is important to locate the technological changes themselves in historical context, to examine the 'old' technology which immediately preceded the 'new' technology being considered.
