ABSTRACT

Not all interviews require transcription. Reasons not to transcribe include lack of funds, insufficient time, poor interview content, and concern over the loss of orality. Alternatives to transcription include making a timed index using word processing software or a spreadsheet. This chapter explores advances in voice-to-text technology that may some day be sufficient to render decent transcripts. It presents a case study of crowdsourced transcription using transcripts generated by voice recognition software. The Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS) is an open source software application that offers a more sophisticated way to make a detailed index, with or without a transcript.
