ABSTRACT

150 county shows, county fairs, and agricultural shows took place across 86 counties in the UK during 2017. They seek to educate, entertain and encourage participation in rural life. Coming in a range of sizes each has accessibility issues in terms of location, logistics, and societal considerations. Three agricultural shows were investigated, using an ethnographic research design, case studies incorporating the phenomenological interpretation of observations and interviews, to analyse the challenge of accessibility. It found that event organisers prioritise accessibility for human and non-human participation whilst evolving and changing to capture the diversity and range of its rural enterprises.
